I actually had some kind of sad DDoS-type attack on the blog earlier this week – 70 different IP addresses all at the same time, all trying to get into the same thing. From all over the world, no less. I normally just have a few people trying it every day, targeting PHP pages that don’t exist, trying to log in, trying to gain access through plugins and themes and forms. . . it’s maddening. They’re not after anything in particular on the site, they’re just trying to get in because it’s here. And because of them, I spend more time checking and tweaking my site security than I do creating content for the blog. That makes me sad.
I do realize that these attacks aren’t personal, and that it’s happening to everyone, but in a way that just makes it worse. Because since it isn’t personal, it’s not an enemy we can go out and fight – we can only block. And holy shit do I do a lot of that lately, one IP address at a time because I actually do have readers all over the world so I can’t block by country without some of them getting locked out by the block too.

This is also the same reason I let most spiders crawl my site and index it – not just Googlebot, Bingbot and Yahoo’s botlike Slurp thingy, but also Russia, China and the UK. Except for the MJ12 bot, because they abused the privilege by trying to index the same 100 files that aren’t here about a thousand times – I have a note on the block for them that says “go index AO3, fucking a-hole bot”, because imagining that their spider has to read that every time it tries and fails to hit the site makes me smile. Simple pleasures, you know.
I think I’ll round this little rant out with a shoutout to all of my current wannabe log-in hackers, since most of the daily ones seem to be individuals who hit the front page of the blog before they do their thing: You aren’t going to be able to guess it, because I like to play Yahtzee. Just give up and find a better hobby, why don’t you? 
IRONIC UPDATE: While I was making this post, something called WebFuck V2.1 T0PHackTeam from Seoul was trying to hack into the blog.
