One of the most feared mythical creatures in the Philippines, the Aswang or ‘tik-tik’ appears to be just a normal villager during the day, but at night shapeshifts into a fearsome predator that feasts primarily on corpses, infants, and small children. They use their long tongue to suck the blood from their victims, or even to suck an unborn child directly from its mother’s womb.
A disturbing little side note about the Aswang: This isn’t a monster born, it’s a monster someone chooses to become by using a simple ritual involving a fertilized chicken egg. A dying Aswang can even pass the ‘gift’ on if they so choose, and legend has it that marrying an Aswang causes the new spouse to become an Aswang as well.
