No, not the Outback kind. Sorry. 🙁
It’s been a while since I’ve done a garden post, but today we’re getting one because I have another weird thing going on in my garden – which I moved up onto the deck as a container garden this year, because having it all strung out in the yard wasn’t working and nothing would grow right and carpenter bees kept chasing me. Anyway, I have all this odd stuff growing all over the deck in pots, and one plant started getting really tall. And then it got white heads on top of two of the stalks, and I started saying, ‘Is this onion I only planted because it sprouted in the bag about to bloom? Onions have flowers?’
Apparently, yes. Lots of them. And they’re pretty.

Honestly, the picture doesn’t really do this plant justice. The stalks are roughly three feet high, that crown of buds and flowers is about the size of my palm, and if you sniff it the whole thing smells very nicely of sweet onion. So the next time you notice that one of the onions you bought at the store is shooting out green stalks, don’t throw it away – stick that sucker in a big pot of soil with just the green parts showing and wait for garden magic to happen! Oh, and did I mention the flowers are edible? Because they totally are, and yes they will taste like onion.
